Code Orange Alert in Effect Monday

The warning means ozone pollution is expected to reach levels unhealthy for sensitive groups.

A Code Orange Air Alert is in effect for Prince George's County on Monday, June 11, meaning ozone pollution is expected to reach levels unhealthy for certain sensitive groups of people.

Public health officials are advising residents with lung diseases like asthma—as well as active children and adults—to limit prolonged outdoor exertion as a result.

Temperatures in the Bowie area are expected to be near 90º on Monday.

The following Code Orange pointers are provided by the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department:

Why should sensitive groups reduce physical activity outdoors? When fine particle pollution levels reach the unhealthy for sensitive groups range, symptoms can include:

  • irritation to the airways, coughing, or difficulty breathing
  • decreased lung function
  • asthma attacks
  • nonfatal heart attacks
  • risk of developing chronic bronchitis.

What can I do to reduce exposure? The most effective way to reduce exposure to high levels of pollution is to reduce time and exertion outdoors:

  • Plan strenuous activity when pollution levels are lower.
  • Reduce the amount of time spent on vigorous outdoor activity.
  • Choose less strenuous outdoor activities (e.g., walk instead of jog).

My primary goal of forming this group, is to give all of us sufferers a feeling of belonging. SoRead More many people feel like they have no where, and no one to turn to, and I want to be that person and provide a group that can offer a pick-me-up throughout the day, or something to look forward to mid-week. So far, I have had 3 people reach out to me which is wonderful, however, I would like to have at least 5 people for our first meeting. I look forward to hearing from YOU soon! ~Cheers, Brittany
