Whitemarsh Weed Warriors Go On The Attack!

Next time you go to the Bowie Playhouse, you may notice some of the trees are slowly having their coat of English Ivy trimmed! This is the energetic work of the local volunteers trained by Natural Resources Committee of the Bowie Green Team as they learn best practices in the removal of this invasive plant species, which is making our eastern forest look more and more like a fantasy jungle. It's a lovely decorative plant in a limited application, but it becomes an out of control invasive when it naturalizes into the environment.

The primary danger is one of bringing down the trees upon which it grows. Though not parasitic, it can completely encompass the trees with the heavy, thick mantle of leaves which this ivy produces. A significant portion of Whitemarsh Park has been heavily infiltrated by English Ivy, a local example of a growing problem across the nation. Watch for the presence of a Green Team booth at the Bowie Farmer's Market on the second Sunday of each month, and get more information about this important environmental improvement project within our community!

If you would like to serve as a volunteer to help cut English Ivy from the trees in White Marsh Park, sign up with the city Watershed Manager, Tiffany Wright by email at twright@cityofbowie.org or by calling (301-809-3043).
