Another Successful Bowie Weed Warrior Event!

On the morning of Saturday, August 10th, Weed Warrior volunteers came out to Whitemarsh Park to take on the English Ivy that is strangling trees. In just two short hours, these volunteers removed Ivy from a dozen trees.

If you are a gardener, you know that the battle many of us have with English Ivy in our own yards can seem never ending. The vine climbs out trees, fences, and sometimes our houses! The plant can damage property and is known to kill trees. Trees covered with Ivy often have dead or dying branches and are more likely to come down in a storm.

Bowie Weed Warriors is an exciting new program and has garnered a lot of attention. The program is expected to expand, with events as frequently as every two weeks! Check out this article by Amber Larkin in the Gazette. Next time you’re in Whitemarsh Park make your way over to the far parking lot nearest the Playhouse to see the impact so far. You’ll notice trees with brown, dying ivy just at and above eye level. Over the coming months, there will be more and more trees on the road to recovery thanks to the diligent Weed Warrior volunteers.
