Winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Crimes of the Heart, written by Beth Henley, centers around three Southern sisters loving, feuding and fussing through a very bad day. How bad? Well, Babe (played by Krista Kronser), the youngest of the three Magrath sisters, has shot her husband and is out on bail. Meg (Caity Brown) escaped the family home in Hazelehurst, Mississippi, but is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast. Lenny (Pamela Northrup), the spinster oldest sister, celebrates her thirtieth birthday by sticking a candle in a cookie and making wish after desperate wish. And Grandpa, who raised the girls after their mother’s sensational suicide (she took the cat with her), is laid up in the hospital, possibly forever. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, will both sting the tear ducks and tickle the funny bone.

Babe, ditzy but sweet, is championed by the awkward young lawyer, Barnette Lloyd (Justin Lewis), who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her. Meg meets the love of her wild youth, Doc Porter (Steven Feder), who is now married to a Yankee, with children. The cast is completed by the Magraths’ cousin, Chick Boyle (played by Johanna Modak) who exudes a certain Southern charm but is essentially self-absorbed and consumed by her concern for appearances.
