'Bearden at Bowie' Opening Thursday

The exhibit will run at Bowie State University from Sept. 20 through Oct. 31.

More than 30 works of art by famous African-American artist Romare Bearden will be displayed at Bowie State University (BSU) beginning on Sept. 20, route: {:controller=>"events", :action=>"show", :id=>"bearden-at-bowie"} --> in the new Fine and Performing Arts Center on campus.

Bearden, who is most famous for his collages, also designed sets and costumes for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and his works are on display in prominent museums across the country, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

“Romare Bearden is an iconic figure in the history of American art,” said the exhibit curator, BSU art professor Clayton Lang, in a BSU press release. “The goal of this exhibit is to educate our students, the BSU community, and local metro area about this great artist and the value of collecting African-American art.”
