Lasting Image: Michael Sawyer's Final Moments Caught in Photo

Friends of Sawyer, who drowned in the Susquehanna River Saturday, provided Patch with a photo taken just before he went swimming with friends.

They are the picture of carefree summer youth: 10 Havre de Grace teenagers standing in the sun, posing above a section of the Susquehanna River known as "the swimming hole." The swimmers among them are a barefoot lot, pausing to pose for the camera before escaping the heat with a swim in the river.

For Michael Sawyer, fourth from the left in the photo, the swim was just a way to pass the time until his girlfriend returned from a shopping trip. They had plans Saturday night.

Sadly, though, the 16-year-old Havre de Grace junior did not make it back to shore, shattering what had begun as just another day in the riverside city.

The photo is believed to be one of the last images of before he .

A life was lost due to kids being kids, its not to sit here and point fingers who is wrong or what should have been done!!! Yes there was a comm. center built and THERE was suppose to be a pool there adn of course WASNT!!! The comm. center was put there for children but its USED for ELDERLY not the children.(for most part) Again, lets remember why this post is here and remember the lost of Mike .....RIP

Hannah, I made that same comment on the facebook post of this pic. Hollie, no. there is not, not has there ever been, a no trespassing or no swimming sign in the area where these kids go swimming. Many generations of us have swam there. These kids DID do everything possible for Mike Saturday! I know they did because two of them are mine, and I know all the others who were there too. Nobody cares about the opinion of anyone who wasn't there . . . nothing else could have been done without possibly losing even more precious lives. The police and city council are only ever concerned with our youth when a tragedy occurs. If they really cared, there would have been a pool built instead of a senior center!! YES, THEY COULD BUILD A POOL!! THEY JUST DON'T CARE ENOUGH TO! There's no reason tigger could give not to that would be good enough! To "The Crew" . . . stay strong guys! I love yas SO MUCH!
