Governor's Bridge Road Bridge Remains Closed

The county estimates that the truss bridge in Bowie will remain closed through the summer, and into the early fall.

Bowie's Governor's Bridge Road Bridge will remain closed through the summer and part of the fall while it undergoes emergency repairs, according the the Prince George's County Department of Public Works and Transportation.

The bridge was closed in April after inspections deemed it unsafe. DPTW inspects all bridges 20 feet or more in length every two years to ensure they are safe for travel.

Repairs are expected to take about four weeks, once they commence, though it will be several more weeks before work begins.

As of Friday, DPWT was still working to identify the scope of the problem, which should take about two more weeks, said Susan Hubbard, spokesperson for DWPT.

Once the scope has been identified, DPWT will let the contract for repairs and then it will have to go through the county's legal review process, said Hubbard.

Only after all these steps are completed will repairs on the bridge begin, likely sometime in late August or early September, according to Hubbard. If things go according to plan, the bridge should be open for use again by late September or early October.

Until then, the bridge will remain closed for vehicles as well as foot and bicycle traffic. Detour signs and barriers have been placed on either side of the bridge for the duration of the project.
