Farm Market Crawl: Riverdale Park Farmers Market

The Riverdale Park Farmers Market offers something for everyone.

Smoked salmon, fresh sausages, crepes hot off the griddle and a bounty of fresh vegetables are just a few of the items you’ll find at the , this week’s stop on my farm market crawl. The market’s held every Thursday from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the intersection of Rhode Island Avenue and Queensbury Road in Riverdale, next to the MARC train station.

The Riverdale market’s charm lays in the variety of items you can purchase there. Fresh foods and produce are clearly the star attraction, but several vendors offer hot, prepared foods making it easy to grab dinner and even dessert on your way home. Stachowski Brand Charcuterie offers fresh sausages and cured meats and Bowie’s own sells their homemade ice creams at the market.

The Thank God It’s Fresh farm in Upper Marlboro and Riverdale’s ECO City Farm, which sells its sustainably raised greens, fruits and vegetables, are just two of the many farms who bring a weekly haul of fresh fruits and vegetables. Groff’s Content Farm offers their organic beef, lamb, goats, eggs and chicken. In addition to the varied food options, the Riverdale market also features live music each week and activities to keep the kids busy while you shop.

My favorite find at this week’s market was fresh garlic scape. Scape is the stalk or stem of the garlic bulb. It has a sharp, garlicky flavor and is a common ingredient in stir fries. I love to put its intense garlic flavor to use in a quick and simple hummus.

Garlic Scape Hummus

Makes about 2 cups.

1 ½ cups chopped garlic scape

1 can garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed

2 tablespoons freshly-squeezed lemon or lime juice

½ teaspoon sesame oil

1/3 cup olive oil

Salt and pepper, to taste

Combine the scape, beans, lemon or lime juice and sesame oil in a food processor and process until smooth, about a minute. While the processor runs, gradually add the olive oil and continue processing until the hummus is smooth and creamy. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve with sliced veggies or pita chips.
