Bowie Woman to Receive Christmas in April Improvements

More than 80 Prince George's County homes will be improved this Saturday.

An 85-year-old Bowie woman will receive a number of improvements to the home she shares with her daughter as a part of Prince George's County's Christmas in April event, according to a county spokesman.

Jessie Thomas, of Chesnut Avenue, needs repairs to her leaky roof, cabinets, drywall as well as some yard work and a gutter cleaning. They don't even have a working refridgerator.

Thomas has lived in her home for 36 years, but now suffers from Parkinson's. Their home is slowly deteriorating but she'd like to remain there.

Thomas' adult daughter has congestive heart failure and diabetes and neither can make or afford to pay for the repairs themselves.

Bruce Thomas, of St. Matthew's UMC in Bowie, is adopting the home and leading the charge to make the necessary repairs.

Four other Bowie residents will receive help as well, according to the county.

The county's Christmas in April program has helped rehabilitate more than 2,000 homes since it launched in 1989.

This year the program selected 83 homes throughout the county.

Although the program no longer needs volunteers for Saturday, they could use people with trade expertise. Residents can also help by donating to the program. Call 301-868-0937 for more information.
