Bowie Mosquito Control Ongoing Through Mid-October

The city is working with the University of Maryland, who will continue spraying and treating stagnant water through next week .

With more than a dozen diagnosed cases of West Nile Virus in Maryland and one confirmed death, Bowie officials remain concerned about mosquitoes in the area.

The city of Bowie has a contract with the University of Maryland to control the blood-sucking insects that continues through mid-October.

Spraying to combat adult mosquitoes is being conducted weekly on Tuesday in north Bowie and Wednesday in south Bowie between the hours of 9 p.m. and 4 a.m.

In addition to weekly spraying, a process known as “larviciding” treats mosquitoes in their immature stages while still in stagnant water, according to a city information sheet. Areas of known breeding will be checked and treated as necessary every three weeks.

The city encourages residents to make sure their yards are free of standing water to eliminate breeding habitats for mosquitoes. Anyone who needs assistance identifying mosquito breeding grounds, or who would like to report stagnant water should contact Public Works at 301-809-2336 or csullivan@cityofbowie.org.
