Bowie Teen Fencer Amanda Sirico Medals at World Cup in France

DC Fencers Club member Amanda Sirico (Bowie, MD) won bronze on Sunday at the Women's Epee Junior World Cup in Dijon, France on Sunday, January 5.  Sirico, 17, is the number two ranked Junior Women's Epee fencer in the United States and 19th in the world.

Sirico, who is attempting to qualify for both the Junior and Senior World Championship teams in 2014, was seeded ninth out of the pools and took a 15-10 win over Shiori Komata (JPN) after a bye into the table of 64.  Sirico advanced to the quarter-finals after victories over Lorenza Baroli (ITA), 15-11, in the table of 32 and Carmel Tulen (NED), 15-6, in the table of 16.  She won her quarter-final bout 15-11 against Alice Clerici (ITA) , but lost to Amelie Awong (FRA) in a close semifinal bout (15-13).  Sirico won the highest U.S. results in a strong field of American contenders; seven team USA members advanced to the top 32.

When asked which was the toughest bout of the tournament, Sirico said "that would have to be with Clerici. I have fenced her three times, once in Grenoble in the final, once at world championships, and this time.  Every time it gets harder and harder and she is a fierce competitor.  I really had to pull it together most of all for that bout.  Just made it in!"
