Back to School Celebrations, Right to Recite, Lazy ‘til Labor Day

Five things to know today in Bowie.

1.) AROUND TOWN » Today is the Back to School Celebration at Bowie Town Center. Drop off school supplies to help students at Benjamin Tasker Middle School. Details on Patch.

2.) YOU SAID IT » Katie Durkin said on Facebook “It's a sign of respect to OUR country. If you don't wish to say "under God" for religious reasons then omit that... but it always bothered me when kids wouldn't even stand and show respect. And no, not ONE of them was doing it for religious/personal reasons it was just because they "didn't want to"... Sad... very sad...” On whether students should be required to say the Pledge of Allegiance in Maryland schools.

3.) WEATHER » The week will end with cloudier skies and cooler temperatures. The daytime high will reach the high-70s, and evening temperatures will be in the low-60s. There’s a slight chance of rain after 11 p.m. Humidity will be higher than yesterday but it won’t feel uncomfortably hot outside. Prepare for the weekend with the Accuweather forecast.

4.) PATCH TIP » The first day of school in Prince George’s County is Monday, and your child will probably be reciting the Pledge of Allegiance before they get their first lesson. So we asked: Should Students Still Say the Pledge of Allegiance?

5.) ICYMI » Summer has found its number one fan: the Maryland Comptroller.
