Alsobrooks Will Use Death Penalty if Available

A spokesperson for the Prince George's County State's Attorney said she will use whatever tools she has at her disposal to prosecute crime.

Proponents of the death penalty in Maryland announced Friday that they will launch a petition to overturn the repeal signed into law this week by Governor Martin O'Malley.  Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger and Washington County Del. Neil Parrott will spearhead and effort to obtain the 55,736 signatures required to add a referendum to the 2014 ballot, giving voters the opportunity to overturn the death penalty repeal.   John Erzen, a spokesperson for Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks, did not offer specific comment on the possibility of a referendum, but did say that she would consider seeking the death penalty in future cases if it were available. “What her position has always been is that she …

Death Penalty Proponents Push for 2014 Referendum

The effort to place the issue on the ballot will be led by Democratic Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger and Washington County Republican Del. Neil Parrott.

Proponents of the death penalty in Maryland will attempt to overturn at the ballot box a new law repealing capital punishment. The effort to place the issue before voters in 2014 will be spearheaded by Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger and Washington County Del. Neil Parrott. The pair is expected to make the effort to collect the required 55,736 official during a Friday morning announcement near Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Shellenberger said the death penalty is an important tool for prosecutors. Prince George's County Opens Homeless Youth Shelter

Promise Place is funded with public and private money.

Prince George's County runaway and homeless youth will now have a safe haven where they can receive help and support. County and community officials gathered Thursday to officially open "Promise Place," the county's first publicly supported shelter for youth. County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III said the county's partnership with the  Sasha Bruce Youthwork, Inc.—"a proven provider of youth services to provide federally supported management and operation of the 24-hour facility"—will give these youth a place to receive case management, food, medical attention, and other crisis intervention services. “This initiative represents several years of dedication and hard work from so many committed individuals,” Baker said. “I have to commend …

Metro to Stay Open Late for Capitals Playoff Games

Metrorail to go to OT if Caps do.

Metrorail, which has a station near Verizon Center (Gallery Place/Chinatown), will stay open an hour later if any Washington Capitals hockey playoff games run late or go into overtime, according to The Washington Post. The Capitals open their quest for the Stanley Cup against the New York Rangers on at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Last year, Game 3 of the Capitals’ playoff series against the Rangers went to triple overtime, ending well after midnight—when Metro typically closes on weekdays. Pr. George's Budget Hearings Set for Tonight

County council seeks feedback on FY 14 budget proposals.

The Prince George's County Council will be holding a budget hearing tonight at 7 p.m. to gather feedback on the proposed county FY 2014 operating budget, six year capital education program, and the Prince George's County Board of Education budget, as well as the proposed budgets for the redevelopment authority, revenue authority and industrial development authority, according a press release. The proposed FY 2013 county budget totals roughly $3.24 billion, an increase of 0.6 percent over the current budget. Furloughs for Federal Employees Kick In

Labor Department workers have already begun taking unpaid leave.

Since October of 2012, Patch has been reporting on the potential effects of sequestration in the DC area, and in March, we detailed some of the thousands of workers that could be furloughed if lawmakers were unable to reach an accord on spending issues. April 21, 2013, was identified by the Department of Defense as the first date that the furloughs could begin. NASA Releases Dazzling Images and Video of the Sun

Images capture the sun as it approaches its peak of solar activity.

In 2010, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) began capturing incredible images of the sun as it ascends towrds "solar maximum," the peak of solar activity in the sun's 11-year cycle. The SDO has been photographing the sun every 12 seconds, in 10 different light wavelengths, then "stitches" the frames together to produce amazing composite images, which it released to the public.
