Bowie Patch's Coverage of the Bowie Baysox 2011 season.
Brandon Waring's two-run single in the fifth inning gave Bowie the lead, and the Baysox hung on for a 5-4 victory over Trenton to earn a split of their doubleheader Saturday night. Waring finished the night with three RBI, but that two-run single helped Bowie bounce back from an early 3-0 deficit after it dropped the opener, 3-2. His single came in the fifth, and Bowie held on for the final two innings—there's just seven in minor-league doubleheaders—to win. The victory moved Bowie (69-57) to within one game of Harrisburg for the Western Division lead. In addition, the Baysox have a 1 1/2-…
Bowie's series opener with Trenton was rained out Friday night and the two teams will now play a doubleheader Saturday. The doubleheader will be a pair of seven-inning games, which is the format in minor-league baseball. The Baysox did get a break, though, as Richmond lost Friday. That gives Bowie a two-game lead over Richmond for the Western Division's final playoff spot.  Bowie comes into the series having lost two of three in Richmond.
The Baysox couldn't hold an early four-run lead and dropped their fourth straight game Wednesday night as Richmond rallied for an 8-5 victory. The loss dropped Bowie (67-56) to just one-half game ahead of Richmond for the Western Division's final playoff spot. There's 18 games remaining for Bowie, but Richmond (66-56) also has a game in hand.  Bowie scored four runs in the top of the first. The big hit was Joe Mahoney's three-run triple as Bowie took a 4-0 lead. But the lead lasted just five batters as Richmond scored four times in the first. Charlie Culberson blasted a three-run homer off …
Bowie again continued to have problems getting hits at the right time Tuesday night as Richmond pulled out a 5-4 victory in an Eastern League game. The Baysox (67-55) now have lost three straight games, struggling in key situations each time. Bowie remains in second place in the Western Division. Joe Mahoney and Buck Britton each drove in two runs for Bowie, but the Baysox finished just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position. The Baysox also left seven on base. Bowie scored twice in the top of the first, but Richmond answered with three in the bottom half and never trailed again. The …
Joe Mahoney and Buck Britton got back-to-back RBI doubles followed by a Brandon Waring homer to spark a four-run eighth inning and give Bowie an 8-5 victory over New Britain Saturday night. The win improved Bowie's record to 67-52 and gave the Baysox possession of first place again. Harrisburg lost and fell one-half game behind Bowie. New Britain was holding on to a 5-4 lead before Bowie rallied in the eighth. Mahoney tied the game with a double, and Britton put the Baysox in front with his RBI double. Waring added some insurance with his two-run blast for the 8-5 lead. Eddie Gamboa (5-1) got…
After enduring three straight losses during the middle part of last week, Bowie now enters its three-game road series with Reading, which begins Tuesday, on a two-game winning streak. The Baysox beat New Hampshire, 5-3, Sunday night after beating the Fishers Cats 7-2 Saturday. Bowie (63-51) trails Harrisburg by just a half game for first place in the Eastern League’s Western Division and owns a one-game advantage over Richmond for second place in the division. HOES SHOWING NO SIGNS OF SLOWING DOWN With Sunday’s 1-for-3 performance against New Hampshire, Hoes has raised his batting average to …
With Bowie’s 12-8 win against New Britain Sunday afternoon, and Harrisburg’s loss to Binghamton, the Baysox (59-48) now trail the Senators (61-48) by just one game for first place in the Eastern League’s Western Division with just more than a month left in the regular season. Richmond (60-48), meanwhile, leads Bowie by just a half game for second place. The top two teams in the division qualify for the Eastern League playoffs. The Baysox finished July 20-10 after beginning the month a game under .500 (38-39). HOES AND FLORIMON STAYING HOT; WARING IMPROVING With Sunday’s 2-for-4 performance …
The bottom of the Baysox lineup carried the offense to a 3-2 victory Thursday night over the New Britain Rock Cats. The bottom four hitters racked up all three of the team’s runs, four of their six hits and all three RBIs. The Rock Cats were off to an early lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, but Bowie was able to come back improving their record to 57-46 on the season. Bowie scored first in the fifth on a bunt by Pedro Florimon that brought DH Buck Britton home after a lead off triple. Ronnie Welty singled in the top of the seventh, driving in two RBIs, putting the Baysox …
Even in the midst of a rough stretch during the latter part of June, during which the Baysox lost six times during a seven-game stretch, Bowie manager Gary Kendall remained confident, and consistently reminded his team, even despite the struggles at the time, that its goal of reaching the postseason was still within reach. The top two teams in each of the Eastern League’s two divisions qualify for the playoffs. And although the Baysox dropped the rubber match of its three-game series with first place Harrisburg Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Senators 6-3, Bowie’s turnaround since that …
Bowie native and Baysox designated hitter LJ Hoes hit two home runs on Tuesday, leading Bowie to a 6-2 win over Harrisburg, and bringing them back within half a game of first place. It was Hoes first two home runs as a Baysox player in his 54th game with the team and he was the third player to hit multiple home runs in a game this season, along with Brandon Waring and Luke Scott. “It just felt good; I put some good swings on the ball, I got some good pitches to handle and I was lucky enough to put some good swings on them,” Hoes said. “It’s just been a long time coming - there have been a lot…
The Harrisburg Senators scored eight runs in the fifth inning on Monday to dominate the Baysox at home in a 13-2 win, putting the Baysox a game and a half behind them for first place. The 11-run loss was the largest on the season for Bowie, and manager Gary Kendall said Harrisburg came ready to play. ““They were a team that has been struggling on that end of it and everything they started to hit started to fall. They hit the ball hard - to their credit. And our bullpen didn't give us that much relief to try and hold the game there, it just got out of hand,” he said. The eighth inning also …
For those who love books and baseball, Sunday night at Prince George's Stadium was fun despite the outcome of the game. The Bowie Baysox took an early lead but could not hold off the Trenton Thunder. Bowie lost 6-4, in spite of help from Baltimore Orioles' Cesar Izturis and Vladimir Guerrero. At the end of the game, about 200 members of the Anne Arundel County Public Library’s Summer Reading Club and their parents marched around the bases to celebrate their summer reading achievements. Those children, and many others, attended the game free with a ticket provided by the Baysox that was among …
The Bowie Baysox nearly swept the Trenton Thunder in the last game of the series Sunday evening with an early lead, but fell 6-4 at home. This brings the Baysox to a record of 55-44 on the season and putting them only one-half game behind Harrisburg for first place in the division. Two Orioles players were in the lineup Sunday—Cesar Izturis and Vladimir Guerrero on major league rehab assignments—each getting a hit and a run in the game. “It felt good to play in Bowie, especially seeing the guys from Spring Training - it’s a good group of people here and they play hard to win games,” Guerrero …
The Bowie Baysox took down the Trenton Thunder 4-1 in the hot huimid weather Friday night. With the win, the team improves to 54-43 on the season, closing in on Harrisburg who they trail by only two games. Left-hander Mike Ballard pitched six innings Friday, allowing only one run on five hits, striking out five batters in his sixth win of the season. The Baysox offense was hinged on a standout performance by Bowie native LJ Hoes with three hits and three RBIs. “Thank god we only needed a couple runs tonight - their guy [Banuelos] was really good and we hung in there,” said Baysox Manager Gary…
Pedro Florimon hit a grand slam for Bowie, but that wasn't enough Tuesday night as Harrisburg edged the Baysox, 5-4. Florimon's sixth-inning grand slam tied the game at four. Harrisburg take taken an early 4-0 lead, but the recently revitalized Bowie offense fought back again. But it wasn't enough as Bill Rhinehart hit a tie-breaking single in the eight off Wynn Pelzer (4-7) for the game-winning run. The Baysox certainly had their chances, but they were only 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. They left eight on base. The loss dropped Bowie's record to 51-43, and the team is now 4 1/2 …
After struggling offensively for much of the first two months of the season, and even part of June, Bowie’s lineup has continued to improve and excel during the last month and a half. With Sunday’s 6-1 win against Richmond, the Baysox (50-42) have won nine of their last 10 games, scoring six runs or more in six of those nine wins. After averaging a meager 2.7 runs per game during a 28 game stretch from May 7-June 3, during which it failed to score more than seven runs in any game during that span, Bowie has averaged 5.9 runs per game in the 36 games since, racking up seven runs or more 13 …
Richmond ended the seven-game Baysox winning streak with a 4-2 victory at Prince George's Stadium. Richmond starter Ryan Verdugo blanked Bowie (48-42) for seven innings, giving up only two hits and striking out nine. The Flying Squirrels got a key two-run homer from Wes Hodges in the eighth for a 3-0 lead before Bowie tried to rally. Greg Miclat's RBI single in the eighth cut the lead to 3-1 before Richmond added a run in the ninth. Caleb Joseph's sacrifice fly made it 4-2 in the bottom half, but Bowie could do no more. Zach Britton (0-1), recently sent down from the Orioles to work on his …
There’s a very simple reason to explain why the Baysox have suddenly looked like an outstanding offensive team during their seven-game winning streak—the middle of their lineup is eating up opposing pitchers. LJ Hoes and Joe Mahoney have anchored the middle of the Bowie batting order and really given the Baysox some punch. That’s a big reason they’ve got a 48-41 record and sit alone in second place in the Eastern League’s Western Division. Hoes has a .341 average with seven RBI in the last 10 games. Mahoney is doing almost as well, hitting .333 with two homers and eight RBIs during the same …
With a pinch-hit home run in the 11th inning of Monday’s game against Altoona, Bowie outfielder Robbie Widlansky not only propelled the Baysox to a 5-3 win against the Curve, but also to their sixth straight win as they now head into the All Star break. After falling to Reading, 6-2, July 5, Bowie won the final two games of its series against the Phillies before completing a four-game sweep of Altoona, the Baysox’s first four-game sweep on the road since July 2007. Bowie (47-41) is 9-1 in its last 10 games, now tied with Richmond for second place in the Eastern League’s Western Division, but …
Robbie Widlansky's pinch-hit, two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning gave Bowie a 5-3 victory over Altoona Monday in the final game before the Eastern League All-Star breakk. The win completed a sweep of the four-game series in Altoona—the first time Bowie's done that on the road in almost four years—and extended the team's winning streak to six overall.  The Baysox now are 47-41 at the break and tied for second place in the Western Division. Bowie gets three days off before starting up again on Thursday at home. Widlansky homered to left when he came on to bat for Brandon Waring in the …
