Youth Cricket Comes to Bowie

The Bowie Boys and Girls Club will offer cricket to kids ages 7 to 14 in July.

Although most club baseball seasons are wrapping up this month, more than three dozen Bowie kids will be picking up a different kind of bat in July—a cricket bat.

is offering cricket as a sport for the first time this year, thanks in part to the U.S. Youth Cricket Association (USYCA), said BBGC Cricket Commissioner Sham Chotoo.

USYCS President Jamie Harrison approached the local club last fall about starting a youth cricket league and offered to provide equipment, T-shirts, and hats for the kids. They accepted his offer.

BBGC will pay the USYCA a fee of $15 per registered child. The fee will cover the cost of the USYCA hats, the USYCA T-Shirts, the USYCA membership cards, and the loan of the cricket equipment.

Starting on July 2, Chotoo and three other members of the Washington Cricket League will be teaching about 60 kids on four teams how to play cricket. There will be two teams of 7 to 9 year olds and two teams of 10 to 14 year olds.

Next week, practice will be at 6 p.m. Monday and Friday at , where they will play on the tennis and basketball courts. After the first week, practice will be on every Monday and Wednesday in July.

During the first half of each session the kids will learn the basics of cricket, and for the second half, the two teams will play a match for each age group.
