Weekend Planner: Jazz Ensemble, Blankets of Hope

U.S. Navy Band Commodores Jazz Ensemble

When/Where: 7:30-9 p.m. Friday at Bowie Center for the Performing Arts

Why Go? The Commodores are the Navy's jazz ensemble, a specialty unit of the United States Navy Band in Washington, DC. Expect to hear jazz, "big band," popular and patriotic music.

Cost: Free, no tickets required (doors open at 6:30 p.m)

Volunteer to Make Blankets of Hope

When/Where: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Ascension Catholic Church and 1 to 5 p.m. at All Saints Lutheran Church

Why Go? This is the sixth annual Blankets of Hope marathon where volunteers make no-sew fleece blankets to be distributed to injured and sick U.S. soldiers. Last year, 200 volunteers reportedly came together to make 366 blankets.

Cost: Free, some supplies provided but you may also bring your own: 2 yards of printed fleece and 2 yards of a coordinating solid fleece, scissors and a ruler

Note: Donations also accepted and checks payable to "Soldiers Angels" can be mailed to Lisa Dodson at 12305 Chalford Ln., Bowie, MD 20715

Open House at St. Pius X Regional School

When/Where: 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Pius X Regional School

Why Go? This is an opportunity to tour the school and visit information booths providing details about the application process along with school-sponsored organizations and clubs.

Cost: Free

Murder by Misadventure

When/Where: 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Bowie Playhouse at Whitemarsh Park 

Why Go? This is the last weekend of the show—reviews have been good, and this murder mystery offers a fun departure from comedies and musicals.

Cost: $17 for adults; $12 for age 62 and older and students; group rates more than 10 available
