Undecking the Halls: How to Dispose of the Christmas Tree

The City of Bowie will pick up your tree with trash collection on Wednesdays in January.

The presents have all been unwrapped, the in-laws have made their way home (unless they're still waiting on a flight!) and it's time to repack all the decorations and put them in storage for another year.

Now what to do with the tree? Within Bowie, residents can put their tree on the curb with your yard waste on any Wednesday in January and the city will pick it up. It's important to note that all lights and decorations must be removed from the tree for pickup.

Those living outside the city limits but still in Prince George's County should have their trees on the curb, decorations and lights removed, by 6:30 a.m. on their regularly scheduled yard waste collection day.

The Prince George's County Department of Environmental Resources (DER) also has two locations where county residents can drop off their Christmas tree for free, with lights and decorations removed, of course.

"This is an eco-friendly way to dispose of your Christmas trees," said Dennis Bigley, Deputy Director of DER in a press release. "Every tree that is collected will be shredded and cured into mulch for our annual Mulch Giveaway event that is held in the spring.  Last year, DER's Waste Management Group (WMG) collected over 78 tons of Christmas trees for recycling."

For more information on the county's tree recycling program or mulch giveaway, contact the recycling team at 301-883-5045.

Editor's Note: The story originally said that county residents should put their trees out with on their normally scheduled trash pick up day, when in fact it should be their regularly scheduled yard waste pick up day. We regret the error.
