Three Bowie Schools to See Bell Changes This Fall

The changes will allow for millions in transportation savings and increased instructional time for struggling students.

In an effort to save around $5 million dollars from the budget, 34 Prince George’s County Public Schools will change their bell times to combine some high school and middle school bus routes, reported the Gazette.

As a result of this change, the school day for affected Bowie schools will shift to 7:30 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. for Benjamin Tasker Middle School, 9 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. for Samuel Ogle Middle School; and 9:30 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. for Chapel Forge Special Early Childhood Center.

School officials say that the bell change will also add an extra 40 minutes of instruction time, which will be used to help struggling students meet state standards, according to the Gazette.

+++ FANTASTIC! We have three kids. We will have two in Kenilworth Elementary, one in Bowie HS and one in Tasker MS. Kenilworth Elem is 1.5 miles from our house and we were told we live to close for a bus. That distance is too far for a 3th grader to walk in my opinion and we have to drive them. I am extremely hopeful that we will be on a bus route when the final decisions are made. Tasker is 1.8 miles from our home and again, for a child making the transition from elementary to middle school, that is too far to walk! I hope we get on some type of bus plan. I do have one concern, my Son will be attending Tasker while also playing football. Practice starts at 6pm and runs until 8. I hope an hour is enough time for him to get home AND get all his homework done. We'll see.
