Anticipating lots of recycling from opening gifts on Dec. 25?
Well, some Bowie residents are in luck, because this year there will be recycling pickup in select neighborhoods on Jan. 1.
New Year's Day is a Bowie city holiday, and most city provided services will be suspended that day. However, the City Council voted at its Dec. 3 meeting to provide some residents with a special trash pickup that day.
Jim Henrikson, director of Bowie’s Public Works Department, said in a press release that every year there are several neighborhoods in the city that end up going two weeks without a recycling pickup. This is because Christmas and New Year’s fall exactly one week apart. However, this year, those neighborhoods were looking at a three-week gap between recycling pick ups.
Henrikson explains in the press release:
Since the holidays fall on a Tuesday this year, 25 city neighborhoods that normally have their recycling picked up on Tuesdays, would have had to hold onto their recycling for three weeks. At a time when residents are doing a lot of entertaining and when the city is doing everything it can do to encourage recycling, waiting three weeks to dispose of one’s recycling seemed very inconvenient for the affected neighborhoods and to be a disincentive to recycling. So Council decided to authorize recycling crews to work on New Year’s Day.
Residents in the following neighborhoods should put their recycling out to be picked up on Jan. 1, 2013:
- Amber Meadows
- Ashleigh Station
- Church Road
- Collington Manor
- Collington Station
- Dixon Crossing
- Glen Allen
- Lake Village Manor
- Mitchellville East
- Mitchellville Road Townhouses
- Oak Tree
- Olde Stage
- Peach Preserve
- Pointer Ridge
- Ridgeview Townhouses
- Tall Oaks
- Woodmore at Oak Creek
- Woodmore Estates
- Woodmore Highlands
This special pickup will apply only to recycling and not to refuse, and is only in effect for this particular holiday. Residents with questions should call 301-809-2344.
