Think the life of the stage is all fame, fortune and fun?
Well, according to Alan Haehnel’s comedy 30 Reasons Not To Be in a Play, produced by the Prince George’s Summer Teen Theater (PGSTT), the dramatic life should be avoided at all costs.
PGSTT’s first comedy in their 40 year history promises fun for the whole family with a cast full of characters who encounter various mishaps, including stage kisses, pink eye infections and even inciting World War III. The play opens on Aug. 3 at the Charis Center for the Arts.
Bowie native Nicole Balay plays several characters in the production. A veteran television commercial actress, 30 Reasons will be Balay's first on-stage acting experience.
“I like acting and I enjoy the class,” said 12-year-old Balay. “It’s a fun play we’re doing.”
This also has been a learning experience for Balay, who said she’s learned how important it is to enunciate when acting on stage.
“You have to enunciate more and talk slower in a play so people can understand easily what you are saying,” she said, “and the play is a comedy so if they don’t hear what you are saying they won’t understand the joke.”
All PGSTT’s performances of 30 Reasons Not To Be in a Play will take place at the Charis Center for the Arts in Bowie. Performances are on August 3, 4, 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. with matinee performances on August 5 and 12 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children under 12-years-old.
Handicap parking is available at the Charis Center lot, but general parking can be found on the street.
PGSTT is a nonprofit teen theater troupe that has been operating in the Washington metropolitan area since 1967. Its mission is “to encourage and promote interests in all facets of theater arts and their production through a summer program for all students; to provide instruction and knowledge in the various standards and skills of various theatrical arts for the teenaged group; to bring the students and the theater into a closer relationship so that both may benefit; and to develop between the student and the theater such programs and productions that will provide an insight into an appreciation of the theater and the theatrical arts.”
