It's hard to imagine that just 11 year ago, the nation was reeling from the aftermath of a terrorist attack.

Sixty eight people from Maryland died that day, including 23 from Prince George's County.

As some readers ponder how the country should continue to honor 9/11's fallen, leaders from Prince George's County and around the region reflect on that tragic day.

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) remember the deaths of 3,000 Americans as the first victims of out nation's fight against terrorism.

“While we suffered a grievous loss that day, we must never forget that we are a strong and determined nation -- a nation that will defeat those who want to harm us," Cardin said. "Today, as we remember those who died on 9/11, we join together to show the world that our nation is strong, united and resolved to defend our freedom and safeguard our liberty against any enemy."

He also asked folks to remember the first responders as heroes— some who lost their lives and others that survived, but remain affected by the events of that day.

"Like no other event in modern history, the terror of September 11, 2001 united Americans regardless of geography, political affiliation, race, gender, or social class, County Executive Rushern Baker said. "As Prince Georgians reflect upon this day eleven years later, let us not forget how this tragedy triumphantly made us more engaged in our communities and better citizens of our country.”

Maryland Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Dist. 4) marked the anniversary by reminding residents to "recommit ourselves to the sense of unity that makes our nation great."

"America is a nation dedicated to freedom, and in the face of adversity we stand together," Van Hollen added.

Gov. Martin O'Malley added, "Each and every year on this day of remembrance, we should look to our neighbors and rediscover all that unites us and has made our nation a beacon of hope and human dignity to the world."

College Park Councilman Patrick Wojahn tweeted, "Remembering that Tuesday morning 11 years ago, sitting in class when the news came and our lives changed."

Even the Redskins newly minted quarterback Robert Griffin III (or RG3) chimed in on social media posting, "We never forget moments in our life that change them forever...9/11. Salute those who sacrificed for our freedom then and now."
