POLL: Should the City of Bowie Curb Trash Pickup?

The Bowie City council is moving forward to see if twice weekly trash pickups are necessary.

Bowie residents are able to set their garbage out on the curb twice a week for pickup, but that may change.

The Bowie City Council recently agreed to conduct a study on the necessity of twice weekly trash pickup to determine if there is still a need now that all residents have large 65-gallon recycling bins, according to a story by the Gazette.

The city began distributing the larger bins in 2009 and completed distribution in September with the hope that the larger bins would encourage more recycling and lead to less solid waste refuse. City officials estimated that cutting trash pickup to once a week could save the city around $7,000 a year, reported the Gazette.

Both the city of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County switched to once weekly trash collection earlier this year, although more than 70 percent of county residents remained opposed to the change.

Now since we have the bigger Recycling clans. I notice that my family is producing more recycling than trash. And if this saves the city money by cutting down trash pick-up to one day, I say go for it.

Some trash days we don't have anything to put out since we recycle so much including kitchen waste. Bowie should go to once/week for trash and use that money on something else in the community.

What a luxury we have in Bowie.... they will pick up virtually anything you put at the curb as long as you prepare it correctly and put it out on the correct day.... The City does a fantastic job. I do think that once a week is very sufficient..... Also, I am curious - only $7000 a year savings... I think it should be significantly higher, don't you?

Hi, Bob. Yes, it may be higher - to clarify, that $7K would be in fuel expenses alone. They would also save money on sold waste dumping fees (which cost the city millions), though how much is up in the air. My guess is that once the full city has been using the larger recycling bins for a longer period, and the city can calculate how much less trash they are producing (IF they are producing less), the savings may be significantly higher.

The savings are more than anticipated by the city. I would vote for 1 day a wekk but something will need to be set up for trash collection if that day is a holiday. As it stands now anyone with a Monday pickup will be hosed a lot.

Concerning the large recycling cans that really do not fit into your garage if you have a car in the garage. I built a structure on the side of my house to accept both the recycle and large trash bin with a 3 foot section for firewood. It has been in place for a year with no problems.
