PHOTOS: Teacher Accepts Shining World Compassion Award

An awards ceremony on Sunday recognized Beverly Berndt of Bowie for her work with Gambian students.

Beverly Berndt of Bowie received the Shining World Compassion Award on Sunday at New Hope Academy (NHA) in Landover Hills, where she is a sixth-grade teacher.

Bowie Patch first told Berndt's story in October about her . The story was picked up by The Huffington Post and Berndt was declared the "Greatest Person of the Day"—someone in the community confronting issues with creativity and passion.

The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association recognized Berndt's work with the compassion award and a to further her work in Gambia.

Pete Theodoropoulos from Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association made the presentation to Berndt on Sunday during an awards ceremony at NHA.

Berndt will lead another service learning project in Gambia this summer.
