PHOTOS: Bowie State University Science Career Day

Prince George's County high school students were inspired by local scientists at last week's event.

On Friday, enrolled in the Pre-College Science Scholars Academy (PCSSA) at Science Career Day, according to a press release issued by the university.

PCSSA is a competitive six-week summer residential program at  for high school students, funded by a National Science Foundation grant.

Selected students participate in a three-year academy, attending five classes a day and earning eight college credits in chemistry and biology upon completion.

Science Career Day speakers included:

  • Dr. Jeanette Epps, astronaut, NASA.
  • Dr. James West, engineering research professor, Johns Hopkins University.
  • Dr. Robert Grumbine, climate scientist, National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration.
  • Dr. David Jett, neuropharmacologist and toxicologist, National Institute of Health.
  • Dr. Briana Pobiner, human evolutionary biologist, Smithsonian Institution.
  • Joshua Parker, 2011 Maryland Teacher of the Year, Windsor Mill Middle School, Baltimore.
