Prince George's Police to Increase Presence at Area Movie Theaters

Bowie police will maintain their current level of patrols around the Regal Bowie Theater.

UPDATE (6:40 p.m.)

Prince George’s County Police (PGPD) will be ramping up patrols around local theaters showing the new Batman movie, Dark Knight Rises following the shooting massacre that took place in an Aurora, CO movie theater Friday during a premiere of the film, according to PGPD spokesperson Julie Parker.

Parker says patrons should notice an increased county police presence.

Bowie Police are not planning on increasing their patrols around the Regal Bowie Theater.

“I don’t see a copycat incident as very likely,” Bowie Police Chief John Nesky said. He also commented that the movie theater employs off-duty police officers to provide security.

According to NBC4, Regal Entertainment Group, which operates the theater in Bowie,  issued the following statement:

"The security and safety of our guests and staff is always our number one priority. As is our custom, we will continue to monitor the situation and adjust our security needs as necessary. In the meantime, our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families."

At least 12 people were killed and 59 wounded when 24-year-old James Holmes allegedly went on a shooting rampage in a movie theater in Aurora, CO during a showing of Dark Knight Rises. The suspect is now in police custody.
