House Fire Just Outside Bowie Quickly Extinguished

A fire broke out this afternoon after what is being attributed to residual gas from a propane line, no injuries or displaced residents.

A flash fire broke out in a house in Glenn Dale, just outside of Bowie in the 11600 block of Prospect Hill Road earlier this afternoon causing approximately $20,000 in damages according to Glenn Dale Fire Chief Robert Mooney.

According to Maj. Paul Cruz of the PGFD, the call center recieved a report of a structure fire at 12:20 p.m. and units arrived on the scene a few minutes later. He also said the fire is being attributed to the propane tank.

Nobody was in the house when the fire erupted, nobody has been displaced and there were no injuries sustained. According to Mooney and Asst. Chief Jeff Miller of the West Lanham Hills Volunteer Fire Department the fire was controlled in about 30 minutes, however crews were on the scene for over an hour and the road was blocked going both directions.

Roughly 35 firefighers and EMT responded to the call which brought out about eight units from Glenn Dale, West Lanham Hills, and Bowie (39, 19) fire stations. City of Bowie Police as well as officers from Prince George's County were on the scene to redirect traffic.

Miller said the cause of the flash fire was trapped residual gas in a line, as a contractor had recently removed a propane tank and water heater from the single-family home. The fire was mostly contained to the area behind the kitchen on the main level, but did extend into other parts of the house.
