Developers, Officials Break Ground for Tanger Outlets at National Harbor
Judge's decision lifts stay on construction, groundbreaking moves ahead on Tanger Outlets.
An outlet mall will still open in Prince George's County, even after local residents voiced opposition.
A groundbreaking ceremony Thursday marked the official start of construction for the Tanger Outlets at National Harbor, according to a tweet by Fire Chief Marc Bashoor with the Prince George's County Fire Department.
A Prince George's County Circuit Court judge ruled Tuesday against Fort Washington and Oxon Hill residents who wanted to prevent construction on the 340,000-sq. foot project, according to NBC.
The outlet mall is expected to bring 85 stores to Oxon Hill, which could possibly also house the county's first casino in Nation Harbor.
The judge said halting the project would have a negative economic impact on the county, but the residents have appealed, according to NBC.

ABOUT TIME: As with all development, there will always be the Nimby crowd. However, the property and sales tax will contribute to the County. Jobs will be created. Not high end government jobs, but we can not continue to wait another decade for FBI headquarters to move here. In the meantime 500 federal jobs are leaving Hyattsville next summer. So we have to take what we can get. There will be some increased air pollution as people from Virginia and the District who do not like the congestion at Potomac Mills and do not want to drive to Arundel Mills, drive to the Tanger project. There will also be buses from the large conventions at the DC convention center bringing people over. The new 11th Street bridge project will make it a easy drive over. As for the local opposition, no body is going to force them to shop at the new outlet mall.

A casino and an outlet on Oxon Hill Rd REALLY. Jay Friedman you obviously don't live in the Fort Washington area. I have no opposition to the casino or the mall I do both,,,shop and gamble. It's the impact on the traffic in our area. I haven't seen any plans to make inprovements on our roads and 210. It's bad enough the traffic on 210 everyday workers morning and evening. Oh I can go dust off some old plans they TALKED about doing on 210 and surrounding areas of Fort Washington such as over passes for local traffic. NEVER HAPPENED... It's going to be horrible unless they make some upgrades to our roadways.. No subway system .... Whewwww 3 months from retirement glad I wont have to deal with that nightmare about to happen.

Development brings traffic. You can't have one without the other. When will people understand this? NOVA and Rockville has some of the worse traffic in the area. It's not because of poor road planning. It's because thousands more people choose to live there, regardless of traffic, than they do here in PG county. Traffic is not a resident's top concern. When people ask about an area they are moving to, they ask two questions; how good are the schools and is there much crime? Questions about traffic almost never make it into the conversation.

Thanks for pointing this out. I was afraid to get people upset by pointing out that we have a huge crime problem, both by elected officials and local residens, as well as schools that would never pass muster to a relocation committee from a major national corporation looking to bring high paying jobs into Prince Georges County. But, those problems may never be solved. So at least getting some jobs and revenue is better than waiting on solving the other issues.

Yay for the impending arrival of outlet malls! Next will be a Burlington Coat Factory, some gas stations, car dealerships, check cashing places, liquor stores, maybe Maryland's Social Services can open another office, a rehab clinic, y'know, the stuff that makes so many a PG neighborhood so... classy. Just like National Harbor!

Dear One Percent BIKER, We must have been looking at different sets of plans. The ones I looked at at the groundbreaking did not appear to offer leases to rehab centers and and state services. In fact the lease rates are far in excess of what the state is willing to pay per square foot. It puts community outreach programs in older, less expensive locations,.
