Former Prince George's Executive Pleads Not Guilty to Bribery, Extortion

Former Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson pleads innocence saying, "We're going to fight. My reputation is at stake, everything is at stake."

GREENBELT—Former Prince George's County Executive Jack B. Johnson pleaded not guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court to all eight counts against him, as federal prosecutors announced additional evidence gleaned from wiretaps would be introduced later this week.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys A. David Copperthite, James A. Crowell IV and Sujit Raman said the bulk of discovery in the case would be completed by late next week.

Johnson, sitting beside attorney William R. Martin, entered his plea before Magistrate Judge William Connelly after hearing the charges against him, which included three counts of extortion, three counts of bribery and a count each of conspiracy and witness tampering.

Each count of extortion and witness tampering carries a maximum sentence of 20 years. The bribery counts have a maximum sentence of 10 years, and the conspiracy count carries a maximum sentence of five years. All counts carry a maximum fine of $250,000.

Johnson, who first hesitated and then fumbled over his words before answering a question from Connelly about the year he was born, will be tried by a jury.

"I don't even recognize the person being charged in these documents," Johnson said outside the courthouse afterward. "We're going to fight. My reputation is at stake, everything is at stake."

Johnson, 61, also thanked the "many citizens" who he said called him daily to "tell me they believe in me."

New Carrollton's Jacques Chevalier II, 55, is not one of those citizens. Chevalier thanked federal prosecutors as they left the courtroom "from the citizens of P.G. County."

"I am sick of ... politicians being corrupt," Chevalier said.

Johnson, of Mitchellville, was indicted on Valentine's Day on eight counts after being ensnared in a countywide FBI corruption probe in November.

The 31-page indictment alleges Johnson committed extortion and accepted bribes totaling more than $200,000 from developers starting in 2003 until he was detained by the FBI on Nov. 12. In return, Johnson allegedly assisted two developers, not named but listed as co-conspirators, in obtaining land and county funding for projects.

The indictment also details several phone conversations in which Johnson allegedly asked liquor store owner Amrik Singh Melhi to contribute money to the County Council campaign of his wife, Leslie Johnson.

Melhi was charged in November in a scheme to distribute untaxed alcohol and cigarettes.

Leslie Johnson won a seat on the council, but faces witness tampering and destruction of evidence charges in the probe. She had been scheduled for a preliminary hearing in U.S. District Court this week, but her attorneys requested a postponement until April 6.

U.S. Attorney spokeswoman Vickie E. Leduc confirmed the hearing had been rescheduled.

Meanwhile, a Prince George's County police officer arrested as part of the FBI investigation was indicted late Monday, along with an alleged co-conspirator.

Officer Sinisa Simic, 25, and Mirza Kunjundzic, 30, were indicted on new charges of conspiring to commit extortion. They had been indicted in October on drug and gun charges and remain detained.

The new indictment says that seven times between September and December 2009, Simic and Kunjundzic conspired to pay police officers to help transport untaxed cigarettes in Maryland and Virginia. The two also participated in the distribution of cocaine, the indictment said.

Prince George's County Interim Police Chief Mark Magaw, who was named to that post by Johnson's successor, County Executive Rushern L. Baker, threw his support behind investigators in a prepared statement released by the U.S. Attorney.

"Corrupt cops tarnish the badge that we all wear," Magaw said. "I appreciate the work of the FBI, IRS, and U.S. Attorney's Office in helping us root out corruption and maintain public confidence in our police force."

I see it like this, its the fault of the PG County residents. Charles Manson could be on the ballot for heavens sake but if there is a (D) next to his name, you silly savages would still vote for him.

Why don't you guys look at AA County for instance and take note of how a county should be run. I like PG County don't get me wrong, but you savages need to get your acts together.

Crofton Resident for County Executive !

Good night friends, I need to get my beauty rest. See you in the morning with my eggs, turkey sausage, and grits!

just so you know all "the PG County residents" did NOT vote for that crook. and I resent being lumped in like that..

Savages?? So along with inaccurate, you're also insulting. Wow, way to get a intelligent, informed conversation going. Try again. You failed.

LOL! I imagine Crofton Resident moved from one side of the Patuxent River to the other, and he/she suddenly became baptized by Republicans and is suddenly "civilized." I resent the "savage" remark, although there is some truth to what you said. It is true that Jack Johnson was elected in 2006 after some unfavorable information was known about him. There were other (D) candidates running at the same time, including Rushern Baker, who would not be looking at jail time if they had been elected. This isn't a (D) vs (R) issue, Crofton Resident. Previous county execs Parris Glendening (D) and Wayne Curry (D) are not headed to jail, and I don't think Rushern Baker (D) will be either. When you get tired of Crofton or they get tired of you, you will always be welcome back in P.G. Just leave your A.A. County elitism behind.

I agree this is the type of case that should be moved to another state on the west coast or some city that will afford both parties a chance of getting a fair trial. If he is to appear in front of a jury of his peers there will be nothing but other criminals there and of course they will let him and his criminal wife off and probably try to sue the government so how.

@ Joe Neighbor - I am actually getting tired of Crofton, thank you for the invite back to Prince Georges County. Maybe you can help me find a place? I feel that me and you will build a very nice friendship that will last for ages!

I don't like to be considered a Republican, because a lot of Republicans are a bunch of super religious ultra conservative goons. And I don't like to be considered a Democrat, because a lot of Democrats are a bunch of liberal silly gooses.

I like to think that I am in the middle of some sorts. Would you guys/gals switch over to the Crofton Resident Party?

Well catch you fellas later, I'm going to have some collard greens and possum. Maybe if I'm lucky Joe Neighbor will give me a back rub to help me fall asleep.
