Farm Market Crawl: Bowie's Farmers Market Opens for the Season

Bowie Patch's Chef Danielle headed out to the Bowie Farmers Market on Sunday for the first harvest of the season.

Farmer’s market season is here and I’ll be visiting markets around the area, offering a look at the vendors, produce, delicious foods and other products local businesses and farmers are offering.

First stop on our Farm Market Crawl is the Bowie Farmer’s Market. It’s held every Sunday from 8 a.m. – noon in the parking lot of the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts at Bowie High School, 15200 Annapolis Road. The market opens promptly at 8 a.m. and closes at noon.

The Bowie Farmer’s Market is the quintessential farm market—one row of vendors, their wares tucked neatly under crisp, white tents. While some of the vendors travel from other parts of Maryland—The Breadery brings its freshly-baked breads from Ellicott City—many of them live, work and grow their products in Bowie.

Molly from in Old Bowie brings their pesticide-free salad greens and herbs like parsley, thyme, oregano and scallions to market. They also bring along their rooster, Elvis.

While fresh produce is abundant at the market, you can also pick up your fill of prepared foods. You can get homemade jams, jellies, relishes and salad dressings from Ginny’s, longtime Bowie resident and farmer’s market vendor. Her Vidalia Onion Relish and apple butters are mouthwatering.

Mama C of offers a range of homemade, all-natural candies, chocolates and even lollipops. If you miss her at the market, you can visit her store Thursdays through Sunday at 13015 9th Street Old Bowie.

My farm market score included a few deliciously sweet tomatoes and fresh herbs. I put them to use in a simple Corn, Tomato & Herb Salad. I used fresh cilantro in my salad, but you can substitute whatever herb you find at the market instead.

Corn, Tomato & Herb Salad

Serves four

1 cup fresh corn kernels (from about 2 ears of corn)

1 cup diced fresh tomatoes

¼ cup minced red onion

1 tablespoon fresh herb of choice

2 tablespoon red wine vinegar

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

3 tablespoons olive oil

3 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled

Combine corn, tomatoes, red onion and herbs in a medium bowl. Whisk together the vinegar and mustard in a small bowl. Gradually whisk in the oil in a slow, steady stream. Pour the vinegar over the vegetables and toss until evenly coated. Sprinkle with the bacon and serve.
