Every Second Counts

There's a consignment shop in Bowie that is more than meets the eye, you just have to know where to look.

Hidden on the back side of Hilltop Plaza lies Bowie's little known secret for shoppers who are looking for something unique.

Every Second Counts is certainly not your every day furniture, décor, or consignment store. It is Bowie owned and operated, and is part of the newly remodeled shopping center on Racetrack Road and 450.

The shop's owners, Dina Bennett and Wendy Torsani, have been working on this consignment store for just over a year now, but it is a dream that has been with them for a lifetime.

"I have always loved shopping at consignment stores. Every time I wanted to go to one, I had to drive to North Beach or Annapolis," Bennett says.

So when Hilltop Plaza owner, Frank Storch, held a contest for residents to come up with original and unique ideas for new stores, Dina and Wendy jumped on it. Within days, the two had won and Every Second Counts was born. Business has been booming ever since.

Beautifully decorated with a shabby chic décor, it is a dream come true for those who seek something different. This is not your IKEA or Haverty Furniture shop. The items here are reused, rejuvenated and ready to come home with you. And because the store accepts new consignments each day, the interior is always changing.

Newcomers can expect to find a great deal on quality merchandise while giving an item a second chance. "Our customers are very excited to find our store. They are always telling all their friends and returning weekly to see what's new," explained Bennett.

What makes this boutique even more unique is the hand finished items that Bennett and Torsani have revitalized themselves. They are constantly seeking new items to try out with different faux finishes or a new paint color. All the bags are hand painted as well, which has been a huge hit with the regulars. Customers can find everything from dressers to costume jewelry and the inventory is always changing.

Bowie resident, Penny Hanes is one of Every Second Counts loyal customers. She says, "It is just a good place to go and the people are wonderful. It is a really unique type of business. My husband and I found it to be a little place we can go to downsize.

"The things that the kids don't want that still have value, we trust them to sell those items. It's a win-win situation. You can bring items in when you don't have time for a yard sale. Why not make some money if you can?"

This store is not only for those who are not only hunting for a deal on a great item, but also for those looking to sell as well. Every Second Counts can be a great alternative for those who want to make a little money on items, but do not have time for yard sales or are uncomfortable using sites like eBay.

In a time where everyone is looking to save or make a dime, those who consign or buy from the shop can consider its impact on the environment as well: recycling these items save landfill space and vintage items are becoming more trendy.

So, if you stumble upon this little treasure shop in Bowie, don't be surprised if you get more than you bargained for.
