City Awards Grants for Special Projects
From reading and science, to cooking and ceramics, special programs in Bowie schools are getting a boost from the city.
The City of Bowie recently distributed 16 educational grants to ten schools for primarily reading programs but also science, agriculture, even ceramics.
The city's education committee designated eligible schools, applicants could be anybody from a teacher at one of the schools to a concerned citizen with a convincing proposal on how to enhance Bowie's education programs.
Among the more interesting proposals will be put to use at Kenilworth Elementary, where they will be following a program that has been in schools for over 20 years called Trout in the Classroom. The program was formulated over many years by teachers, volunteers, local organizations, government agencies and an organization called Trout Unlimited.
The program starts in late fall, and has the students start with trout eggs and eventually has them release the trout into the wild in the spring. The ultimate goals of the program are to teach students about coldwater conservation, water quality and to have them reconnect with natural resources.
The awards and amounts granted were based on the number of applications, the quality of the projects and the applications themselves, and the amount of money that was requested.
