Bowie Youth Wins Gold Medal in Fencing Championship

Amanda Sirico's win at a national tournament in Salt Lake City earned her an alternate spot on Team USA, which will compete in a world championship in Moscow this spring.

After a highly -competitive tournament with more than 1,500 fencers from fencing clubs nationwide, Amanda Sirico of Bowie walked away with a gold medal and a Junior Olympics title.

The national tournament was held Feb. 17-20 in Salt Lake City. Amanda faced a field of 145 Cadet women epeeists and advanced through seven direct elimination bouts to win the gold, according to a release from the DC Fencers Club.

The Junior Olympics is a national event organized by the United States Fencing Association. According to the release, young men and women competed in three fencing weapons—epee, sabre and foil—in three categories: Cadet (younger than 17); Junior (younger than 20) and team events.

Amanda's win earned her an alternate slot with Team USA for the Junior and Cadet World Fencing Championship, to be held March 31 to April 8 in Moscow.
