Bowie State Opens Gay Student Resource Center

Bowie is the first historically black college to open a facility specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex students.

Maryland’s oldest historically black college became the first one in the nation to open a resource center for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex students and their allies.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Allies (LGBTQIA) Resource Center opened April 2 on the third floor of the MLK Building. The Resource Center will offer students a library of LGBT educational materials, counseling services, workshops, programs and workshops to raise awareness about sexual orientation issues on campus, reported The Sentinel.

The center is currently overseen by Adrian Krishnasamy, an assistant professor in the department of communications and two students, although Bowie State is seeking funding to staff the center.

The LGBTQIA Resource Center was funded through donations from The DC Center for the LGBT Community and other organizations.

The Resource Center is open Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m.
