Bowie Senior Center to Host Book Lovers Expo

The expo will be open to the public and feature local Bowie authors reading and signing their books.

More than 20 published local authors will attend the Expo on Aug. 18, where they will have the opportunity to read from one of their works and sell and sign books for Bowie residents.

The event, which will run from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., is free to the public and features mainly authors that hail from Bowie, with a few from surrounding areas, such as Davidsonville or Annapolis, according to Jenny Tringali a program assistant at the and the coordinator for the expo.

“We’re giving local authors the opportunity to showcase their work,” said Tringali.

At one time, the senior center had a book club and local authors would come individually and read from their books, said Tringali, but the book club fizzled out. When she was contacted by a local author who wanted to do a reading, she came up with the idea to invite several local authors to read on one day, so that everyone had the same opportunity to share their work.

“I didn’t expect such a good turnout,” said Tringali, who originally expected only a dozen or so authors. She has nearly twice that many committed to the event. She has had to turn away some authors and put them on a waitlist for a future event.

Of the attending authors, 21 will read an excerpt of their choice from one of their books. The books will be on sale at the expo and the authors will be on hand to sign them for buyers.

There will be something for everyone at the expo, with book genres including science fiction, children’s literature, urban fiction, poetry, self-help and more.

Participating authors include Bowie residents Rebecca Coleman and Austin Camacho. For a full list of authors, check the flyer on the city of Bowie website. The Bowie Senior Center is located at 14900 Health Center Drive. Call 301-809-2300 for more information on the expo.
